MantleMaps turns a spot on the map into a relief you can hold. I start with open map data — the same terrain, water, greenery, buildings and streets that make a place feel like home — and print it as a real object for a shelf or a wall. The city where you met someone, the trail you hike every weekend, the view from the cabin: one place, one map, made for you.

From a point on the map to your door

2. 2I pull the real map dataOpenStreetMap gives the streets, buildings, parks and water; satellite elevation gives the terrain. Your design and the data version are frozen the moment you pay.
3. 3The scene becomes layersTerrain, greenery, water and structures are split into four solids that fit together, then sliced for the printer.
4. 4Four filaments, one printEach map prints in four colours on my own machines in Gretna, Nebraska — a few hours for a town, most of a day for a dense downtown.
5. 5Framed, packed, shippedI assemble the wood or black frame around the map by hand, pack it in a rigid box, and hand it to USPS with tracking.
